About Outdoor Life Leadership
Outdoor Life Leadership is a grassroots, volunteer-driven nonprofit based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our mission is to help young men build practical skills for safety, leadership, problem-solving, and economic opportunity by learning skills, practicing them, and using them in real-world situations.
We believe young men need more than information. Young men need a chance to learn a skill, practice it with their own hands, make decisions, solve problems, and use what they learned in real life. That is what Outdoor Life Leadership is here to provide.
Why We Started
Outdoor Life Leadership was founded in 2024 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The idea grew from seeing a real need in our communities. Many young people do not get enough chances to learn basic outdoor safety, emergency preparedness, hands-on life skills, or leadership through real experiences.
Families also need safe and affordable ways to spend time together, learn useful skills, and prepare for emergencies. Young men need opportunities to build skills that can help at home, in their communities, in school, and later in a career.
We saw a gap, so we created Outdoor Life Leadership to help fill it.

Story
What We Believe
We believe practical skills matter. Knowing what to do during an emergency can save a life. Knowing how to solve a problem can prevent a small issue from becoming a bigger one. Knowing how to lead can help someone make better choices.
We also believe useful skills can open doors. Learning a trade or other practical skill can lead to education, career, and income opportunities. These opportunities should not be limited to young people who have access to expensive programs, equipment, or outdoor experiences. Outdoor Life Leadership works to expand access.
How We Help
Our approach is simple: Learn It. Practice It. Use It.
Young men first learn the knowledge behind a skill. Next, young men practice the skill through hands-on activities. Then, young men use the skill in real situations. This helps turn information into ability.
It also gives young men a chance to make decisions, solve problems, take responsibility, and learn from experience. Our work focuses on safety, life skills, leadership, and economic opportunity.
We help young men understand what to do before, during, and after an emergency. We teach useful skills that can help with everyday situations. We give young men chances to make decisions, take responsibility, help others, and lead. We also connect practical skills to education, careers, trades, and income opportunities.
What We Do
Who We Serve
Outdoor Life Leadership serves young men ages 7–24, parents, and families. Our focus is on making outdoor learning and practical skills more accessible to young people who may not have many chances to take part in these experiences.
We are based in Winston-Salem and serve our local community and surrounding areas. We also build relationships with volunteers, donors, businesses, corporations, community groups, and other partners who believe young people should have access to useful skills and real opportunities.
Our Approach Is Hands-On
We do not believe young people should only sit and listen. Young men learn by doing.
That may mean practicing safety skills, learning how to prepare for an emergency, using tools, solving a problem outdoors, leading others, learning a trade, or taking part in a real-world challenge.
The goal is not simply to say, “I learned it.” The goal is to be able to say, “I know how to do it.”
Safety comes first in everything we do. We believe young people should have a fair chance to learn, grow, and take part. We give young men opportunities to build confidence through real skills and real responsibility.
We also help young men learn how to prepare, adapt, and keep going when things do not go as planned. We create spaces where young people, families, volunteers, and community members can learn together.
We teach young people to enjoy, understand, and care for the outdoors. We give young men opportunities to make choices, take responsibility, lead, and help others. We believe skills become even more valuable when people use them to serve their families and communities.
We Are Building This With Our Community
Outdoor Life Leadership is in its startup phase. We are building our systems, growing our volunteer base, expanding access, and creating more opportunities for young men and families.
We are not trying to do this alone. Our organization is powered by people who give their time, skills, resources, equipment, ideas, and support.
Volunteers help move the mission forward. Donors help provide the tools and resources young people need. Community partners help us reach more people. Families and young men help us understand what is needed.
Together, these efforts help Outdoor Life Leadership grow in a practical and responsible way.
Our Commitment
We are committed to building an organization that is practical, accessible, and focused on results. We want young men to leave an experience with something they can use.
That may be a new skill, greater confidence, a better understanding of safety, an opportunity to lead, or a problem they learned how to solve. It may also be a practical skill that can one day open a door to education, a trade, a career, or income. That is the kind of impact we are building.
