SafeTogether: Family Safety & Outdoor Skills

Children and families learning basic fire safety

Helping Winston-Salem families build skills, confidence, and safer communities.

SafeTogether is a community program by Outdoor Life Leadership that helps young people and families learn practical safety and outdoor skills through hands-on activities. Participants learn new skills, practice together, and build confidence they can use in everyday life.

Our program brings families, youth, volunteers, and community partners together to make safety education useful, welcoming, and fun.

Learn It. Practice It. Use It.

What Is SafeTogether?

SafeTogether helps children, youth, parents, and caregivers learn how to prepare for emergencies and handle basic outdoor tasks. Instead of only listening to a lesson, participants get opportunities to practice what they learn.

Our goal is to help families become more prepared, work together, and build stronger connections with their community.

What Will You Learn?

Fire Safety

Learn basic fire prevention, smoke alarm awareness, safe ways to leave a building during a fire, and how to make a family escape plan.

Emergency Preparedness

Learn how to prepare for emergencies, organize basic supplies, create a family communication plan, and understand when to call 911.

Tent Setup and Take-Down

Practice choosing a suitable campsite, setting up a tent, securing it safely, taking it down, and packing equipment away properly.

Teamwork and Problem-Solving

Work together on hands-on activities that build communication, responsibility, confidence, and practical decision-making skills.

Who Can Participate?

SafeTogether is designed for young people, parents, caregivers, and families in Winston-Salem and surrounding communities.

Children and youth can build useful skills while adults learn alongside them. Families can practice together and take what they learn home.

Community Safety Starts With Us

Outdoor Life Leadership believes that practical skills become valuable when people have the chance to use them.

Through SafeTogether, we work to connect families with learning opportunities, volunteers, and community partners who care about youth safety and family preparedness.

Our approach is simple:

  • Learn It: Understand the skill.

  • Practice It: Build confidence through hands-on activities.

  • Use It: Apply the skill in everyday life.
