Bear Captains
Leadership Development for Young Adult Men

Bear Captain Tent Setup

Bear Captains isn’t your average run-of-the-mill leadership gig. It’s for young men, 18 to 24. Instead of just hiking with a compass, camping and eating questionable campfire food, you learn how to actually lead younger men. No awkward ice-breakers, either we’re talking real mentorship, like helping the next generation of Bear Archers through some wild outdoor stuff and legit survival moments. Sure, it’s about building skills, but honestly? It’s about stepping up, owning your choices, and realizing you might actually have something to offer to the crew behind you. Not bad for a summer or two.

So here's the deal with the Bear Captains Program

It’s not some boring classroom leadership thing where you just sit around and listen to talks. These young men actually get their hands dirty. They learn how to lead, but we’re talking serious stuff: running the show out in the wild, building challenges, and showing the younger Bear Archers how it’s done. Not like your normal boot camp scenes in movies but more.

Mentoring isn’t just volunteering here, it’s a big deal. Bear Captains step up and actually teach survival tactics they’ve already proven they know, from spotting edible plants (so you don’t accidentally poison yourself, bonus!) to finding water when you’re five miles from nowhere. It’s basically adulting on expert mode.

Honestly, volunteering as a Bear Captain is a game-changer for young men too. It’s wild how much you start figuring out about yourself when you have to keep a bunch of teenagers from eating mystery berries or wandering off into nettles. You grow up a bit. The whole thing’s a confidence boost and, believe it or not, kind of addictive.

Then there’s the survival and emergency training part, which sounds dramatic, and it kinda is. Imagine being the person everyone looks to during a blackout or a flood or whatever. Well, Bear Captains can actually handle it when things get real, instead of just standing around panicking.

And let's get started on career stuff. Lots of Captains take what they learn and end up working as park rangers, game wardens, or in public safety. You know, there’s a big focus on turning these skills into real-deal career options. Pays off down the road.

Leadership isn’t just a buzzword here, either. Captains straight-up lead. They run teams, solve problems on the fly, make sure nobody gets left behind. It’s more action, less hand-holding.

When you walk away from the Bear Captains experience, honestly, you’ll be ready for just about anything life’s gonna throw at you whether it’s disaster, a job interview, or just trying to get your friends to agree on pizza toppings. These young men leave as leaders, role models, and the kind of humans you’d want to have your back when it all hits the fan.
